May 22, 2025 – Today at the Dutch national CompSys conference, I gave a presentation about our new paper “Tuning the Tuner: Introducing Hyperparameter Optimization for Auto-Tuning”, which I’m currently writing together with Rob van Nieuwpoort and Ben van Werkhoven. CompSys is a Computer Science conference in the Netherlands on Computer Systems research, with the goal of showcasing work and fostering collaboration.
In our talk, we introduced a novel method to improve auto-tuning performance by applying hyperparameter optimization techniques—essentially tuning the tuner itself. We demonstrated the effectiveness of our approach across a range of real-world applications, showing how smarter configuration of the tuning process leads to substantially faster convergence and better performance outcomes. I hope to share more details on this work as soon as it is published, as we move toward submitting the final version of the paper. The talk sparked several interesting discussions and ideas for further collaboration afterward.
I’m very excited to share that this presentation at CompSys 2025 received the Best Presentation Award. It’s an honor to be recognized among the 28 excellent contributions from across the Dutch computer systems research community. I’m grateful for the opportunity to present our work and look forward to the continued collaboration.
