Workshop on Research Software Engineering in the Age of Generative AI

March 25, 2026 - I travelled to Edinburgh in Scotland to attend a three-day workshop on Research Software Engineering in the Age of Generative AI organized by the Research Software Alliance (ReSA). The introduction of Generative AI is rapidly changing the way that software is being developed around the world, also in academia. The goal of the workshop is to develop a vision for how research software will be developed now that GenAI is here is to stay.

The workshop is bringing together over 35 participants from around the world. All of whom are active in different roles within the research software engineering community and with various degrees of AI adoption so far, from AI sceptics to “Claude-pilled” enthusiasts.

The workshop will consists of a few introductory talks, but most time will be dedicated to focused working groups, where we will actively work together to explore the possibilities and discuss the opportunities and risks that AI is bringing to academic research and research software.

I am very grateful to have been invited to the workshop and look forward to contribute to the discussions!
